What is the role of the Crane Supervisor

The crane supervisor is responsible for the overseeing of the lifting operation on site. They will direct and supervise the lifting operation to ensure it’s carried out safely as set out in the lift plan produced by the appointed person.

The right level of supervision must be in place to reflect the degree of risk and personnel involved in the lifting operation. All operations should be supervised by a suitably trained and qualified supervisor.

Target Delegates

The 3 day CPCS Crane Supervisor course is ideal for candidates who is required to supervise safe systems of work using lifting equipment.

It is recommended that prior to attending this course individuals should have some experience of working with lifting equipment, especially mobile cranes.

The course is a mixture of both theory and practical training and incorporates the CPCS theory and practical tests.

Successful completion of the tests will result in the issue of the CPCS Red card which is valid for 2 years.

The CPCS Blue Card Package is also available for all candidates, this includes the course and the NVQ.
The Blue card package is the cheapest and quickest way to gain your Blue CPCS card.

For those candidates who have experience as a Crane Supervisor or those who have an expired blue card and wish to re-enter the CPCS scheme and may already have the evidence they could use for their NVQ, they could have the option of the Straight to Blue CPCS card package. 

Both the Blue card package and the Straight to Blue Package could also be suitable for candidates who have let their CPCS card expire.

Pre Course Requirement

Individuals should have some experience of working with lifting equipment, especially mobile cranes.

For the CPCS Crane Supervisor course, you will need The Health Safety & Environment test for Specialist Supervisors or the Managers & professionals (MAP)

This is a 45 minute touch screen multiple choice test consisting of 50 questions. This test can be taken at various Person Vue test centres though out the country, you can arrange your own test and locate your nearest test centre by clicking here.

Revision is strongly recommended for the Health & Safety Test; revision books, DVDs and downloads are available from CITB store.

If you are struggling to get a date for the health and safety test and your training course in imminent if you are training at Lancashire you can take the HSE test at the beginning of course. Please ask for details and we will guide you through what you need to do.

Course Aim and Contents:
The aim of this course is to provide candidates with underpinning knowledge in order for them to
understand the role and responsibility of the Crane Supervisor. Following successful completion of
the course candidates will be able understand and follow safe systems of work for lifting operations
including risk assessments and method statements.

  • Codes of practice ‐ BS7121
  • Roles and responsibilities of personnel involved with lifting operations
  • Crane appreciation ‐ crane types, capabilities and limitations
  • Duty charts

  • Documentation and certification for lifting equipment and lifting accessories
  • Crane stability/ground conditions
  • Safe Load Indicators (SLI) and Safe Working Loads (SWL)
  • Lifting accessories
  • Types of accessories and use
  • Slinging techniques
  • Down rating of accessories
  • Sling angles
  • Communications
  • Planning a lifting operation
  • Preparing a lift site in accordance with the AP’s safe system of work (end test)

Successful candidates will be awarded a Red CPCS Trained Operator card endorsed with the category Crane Supervisor (Lifting Operations).
