What is the role of a mobile crane operator?

A mobile crane is a wheeled, self-propelled vehicle with either a cable-controlled or hydraulic-powered telescoping boom crane. They can travel on the highways moving from site to site as needed.

The crane operator is responsible for operating the crane in accordance with training and the manufacturer’s instructions. They will lift, move, position and reposition loads following instruction from the slinger/ signaller.

Target Delegates

The 6 days CPCS Mobile Crane course is idea for candidates who are required to operate mobile cranes for lifting operations on construction sites and other allied industries.

No previous experience is necessary. (However some previous hydraulic experience is an advantage). Also it is vital that you have the CPCS A40 Slinger Signaller category. If you are not familiar, you would need to complete the Slinger Signaller course first.

Good hand/eye co-ordination is required. Please note that a Group C category licence is required for driving on the open road, however this is not essential for the course.

Pre Course Requirement

Individuals can have little or no experience of working with lifting equipment, especially mobile cranes. However it is essential that you have a good knowledge of Slinger Signaller Signals. ( below) and have achieved the CPCS A40 Slinger Signaller .

For the CPCS Mobile Crane course, you will need The Health Safety & Environment test for Operatives is required or the higher tests of the Specialist Supervisors or the Managers & professionals (MAP)

This is a 45 minute touch screen multiple choice test consisting of 50 questions. This test can be taken at various Person Vue test centres though out the country, you can arrange your own test and locate your nearest test centre by clicking here.

Revision is strongly recommended for the Health & Safety Test; revision books, DVDs and downloads are available from CITB store.

If you are struggling to get a date for the health and safety test and your training course in imminent if you are training at Lancashire you can take the HSE test at the beginning of course. Please ask for details and we will guide you through what you need to do.

CPCS Mobile Crane A60 endorsement C (All Duties)

Course Aim and Contents:

COURSE AIM AND CONTENTS 

The aim of this course is to provide candidates with underpinning knowledge in order for them to understand the role and responsibility of the Mobile Crane Operator. Following successful completion of the course, candidates will be familiar with the cab and levers, be able to rig and de-rig an All-Terrain crane. Operate the crane to lift, transfer and position loads on blocked & pick and carry duties and carry out routine maintenance.

Topics covered during this course include: Legislation – LOLER, PUWER, and HASAWA. Codes of practice – BS7121

  • Roles and responsibilities of personnel involved with lifting operations
  • Crane appreciation – crane types, capabilities and limitations
  • Duty charts
  • Crane terminology
  • Documentation and certification for lifting equipment and lifting accessories
  • Crane stability/ground conditions
  • Communications (Radio, verbal and hand signals etc.)
  • Cab and lever familiarisation
  • Rigging and De-Rigging of cranes according to written instructions
  • Configuring cranes according to work specifications
  • Hoisting, slewing and derricking following the instruction of the slinger/signaller
  • Controlling load movement
  • Routine maintenance
  • Use of crane on free on wheels duties
  • Use of crane on pick and carry duties

Certification

Successful candidates will be awarded a Red CPCS Trained Operator card endorsed with the category Mobile Crane endorsement C All Duties A60.

Next Stage

Please note the Red CPCS card is only valid for 2 years. Within this time you must complete your NVQ level 2 Diploma to convert from Red card to Blue card. To book your NVQ please click NVQ booking.

The Blue CPCS card is valid for 5 years.
